What I wanted to do with this article was apply Securitization theory from International Relations, Gramsci's theory of Hegemony, and Laclau's concept of Democratic demands to the back and forth hacktivism and contestation between WikiLeaks, Anonymous and various banks, financial services and governments in the wake of the diplomatic cable releases. The paper actually follows on theoretically from the forthcoming Securing Virtual Space article which will be coming out in Space and Culture in the new year. It should hopefully stand on its own though. It's in response to some of the more alarmist accounts of online conflict.
